As with any language, learners of English need to learn vocabulary in order to be able to communicate effectively. Vocabulary is not just about learning English words or phrases that have a direct translation in another language. Learners also need to learn expressions and idioms. Sometimes translations of whole sentences do not make sense in another language. Other times it is not possible to translate a whole sentence. Even if one were to write the sentence in English, the same meaning could not be conveyed in another language. The vocabulary also needs to be learnt for other reasons. It is useful to know how many words there are, for example, approximately 1,500 words are used daily in spoken or written English. Some of these are technical terms or idioms that are difficult for learners of English to understand at first. These words are called technical vocabulary by linguists and could even cause misunderstandings when words are translated literally. Correct vocabulary use can greatly improve a learner's writing and speaking. The vocabulary of the world's languages is very diverse and it is difficult to define words in another language that mean exactly the same thing as in your own. This is because of wide differences in languages made possible by systematics, morphology, phonology and syntax which influence word forms in different language systems. In addition, rules for word formation, both from root morphemes and from affixes or prefixes have been adapted from one language to another so that they do not necessarily resemble each other in all cases. For example, a noun may be a noun in one language but a verb in another. cfa1e77820
